Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Deoxycholic acid injection (ATX-101) is a novel injectable drug approved in the United States (Kybella) and Canada (Belkyra) for the reduction of submental fat, commonly known as a double chin. 3 , 2 , 16 This drug works by breaking down fat cells, resulting in a reduction in the appearance of a double chin. 16 , 15 Clinical trials have shown that ATX-101 is effective in reducing submental fat and improving the appearance of the chin and neck. 17 , 11 , 21 ATX-101 has also been shown to be safe for most patients. 17 , 18 , 11 However, common side effects include pain, swelling, and bruising at the injection site, which are typically mild to moderate and transient. 17 , 18 , 7 Rare but serious complications have also been reported. , , 1 , 4 Researchers have found that proper injection technique and careful dosage adjustments can potentially minimize these side effects. 3 , 5 , 8

Benefits and Risks

Benefit Summary

Deoxycholic acid injections are an effective treatment option for reducing the appearance of a double chin, and have been found to be safe for most patients. Additionally, it offers a less invasive approach with a shorter recovery time compared to surgical interventions. 2 , 16 , , 7

Risk Summary

Deoxycholic acid injections can cause side effects such as pain, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. 17 , 18 , 7 Rare but serious complications can occur. , , 1 , 4

Study Comparison

Study Commonalities

Multiple studies have shown that deoxycholic acid injections are effective in reducing the appearance of a double chin. 17 , 11 , 21 Many studies also report injection-site side effects such as pain, swelling, and bruising. 17 , 18 , 7

Study Differences

Different studies have observed varying levels of effectiveness and side effects from deoxycholic acid injections. 11 , 21 These variations may be attributed to differences in study methodology and participant characteristics. 11 , 21 , 9 , 20 Researchers have noted the need for further research to better understand the long-term effects and safety of deoxycholic acid injections. 3 , 5 , 8

Consistency and Inconsistencies of Results

While multiple studies demonstrate the effectiveness of deoxycholic acid injections in reducing the appearance of a double chin, there are differences in the extent of effectiveness and the frequency of side effects reported. 11 , 21 These discrepancies could be attributed to differences in study methodology and participant characteristics. 11 , 21 , 9 , 20 Furthermore, the long-term effects and safety of deoxycholic acid injections remain incompletely understood. 16 , 7

Practical Application Considerations

Deoxycholic acid injections are a promising treatment option for reducing the appearance of a double chin, but it is essential to understand the potential risks. 17 , 18 , 7 Prior to considering this treatment, consulting with a qualified medical professional to discuss your individual health status and potential risks is crucial. 3 , 5 , 8

Limitations of Current Research

Current research on deoxycholic acid injections lacks comprehensive information on long-term effects and safety. 16 , 7 Additionally, the sample sizes in some studies are limited, making it difficult to generalize the findings to the broader population. 11 , 21 , 9 , 20

Future Research Directions

Further research on the long-term effects and safety of deoxycholic acid injections is necessary. 16 , 7 Studies involving diverse populations, including individuals with different age groups and health conditions, are also recommended. 11 , 21 , 9 , 20

Conclusion

Deoxycholic acid injections hold promise as an effective treatment option for reducing the appearance of a double chin. 16 However, it is crucial to understand the potential risks associated with this treatment. 17 , 18 , 7 Consult with a qualified healthcare professional to discuss your individual health status and potential risks before considering this treatment. 3 , 5 , 8 Further research on the long-term effects and safety of deoxycholic acid injections is anticipated. 16 , 7
