Overview

Individuals receiving HAART regimens containing protease inhibitors (PIs) reported a significantly higher rate of sexual dysfunction (SD) than those not receiving PIs. A decrease in sexual interest was reported by 40% of PI-treated subjects, compared to 16% of PI-naive patients. A decrease in sexual potency was reported by 34% of PI-experienced men, compared to 12% of PI-naive men. The study also found a significant association between SD and symptomatic HIV infection, age, and homosexual contact as a mode of HIV transmission.
