Overview

Antithyroid drugs (ATD) are used to treat Graves' disease (GD). While remission occurs in approximately 50% of patients after six months of treatment, relapse rates are high (60-80%). This study investigated the remission and relapse rates of GD in patients treated with propylthiouracil (PTU) or methimazole (MMI) in Brazil. Remission was observed in 45.7% of patients, with a relapse rate of 53.4%. Large goiter size, Graves' ophthalmopathy, and high ATD doses were associated with lower remission rates. TSH measurements between 4-5 weeks after drug withdrawal may help predict relapse risk.
