Overview

This study investigated the side effects of adding medroxyprogesterone acetate to estrogen therapy in postmenopausal women with previous hysterectomy and oophorectomy. Two groups of women (those with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and those without PMS) received either medroxyprogesterone acetate or placebo in a randomized, double-blind crossover design. There were no significant differences in mood or physical symptoms between the two treatment periods. The study concluded that adding medroxyprogesterone acetate to estrogen therapy for one cycle did not produce any consistent negative physical or psychological effects regardless of a history of PMS.
