Overview

Physostigmine gel applied to the oromucosal surface significantly reduced the feeling of dryness in patients with dry mouth. The 1.8mg dose provided long-lasting relief for up to 120 minutes, with a 25 point reduction on the visual analogue scale. Saliva volume was 5 times higher with physostigmine compared to placebo. Higher doses of physostigmine were associated with gastrointestinal discomfort.
