Medical therapy of Cushing's disease: where are we now?
Author: AlexandrakiKrystallenia I, GrossmanAshley B
Original Abstract of the Article :
The goals of ideal medical therapy for Cushing's disease should be to target the aetiology of the disorder, and thus surgery is the current 'gold standard' treatment. However, no effective drug that directly and effectively targets the adrenocorticotropin-secreting pituitary adenoma has been found t...See full text at original site

Medical Therapy of Cushing's Disease: Where Are We Now?
Cushing's disease, a condition caused by an overproduction of cortisol, can be like a desert mirage, making you feel thirsty and fatigued, but the water is just out of reach. Surgery is currently the gold standard treatment for Cushing's disease, but it's not always effective. This study reviews the current medical therapies available to manage this condition.
The study explores different types of medications used to control cortisol levels, including inhibitors of adrenal steroidogenesis, adrenolytic agents, compounds with neuromodulatory properties, and ligands of nuclear hormone receptors involved in the hypothalamo-pituitary axis. Some of these medications, like ketoconazole and metyrapone, can effectively control cortisol levels, but they can also have side effects. The study also discusses the promising therapeutic potential of the somatostatin analogue pasireotide and the dopamine agonist cabergoline, as well as the combination of these two drugs.
New Hope for Cushing's Disease Treatment
This study offers a glimpse into the future of medical therapy for Cushing's disease. While surgery remains the gold standard, the development of new medications like pasireotide and cabergoline provides hope for more effective treatment options.
The Importance of Early Diagnosis and Treatment
Early diagnosis and treatment of Cushing's disease are crucial. Just as a camel needs to find water in the desert, those with Cushing's disease need proper medical care to alleviate symptoms and prevent long-term complications.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
Cushing's disease can be a challenging condition to manage, but ongoing research is offering new hope for effective medical therapies. By working closely with their healthcare providers, patients can navigate this desert journey and find relief from the debilitating symptoms of this disease.
