Overview

This study compared different treatment approaches for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) based on disease stage. For early-stage CLL, no treatment was found to be more effective than observation, and chemotherapy (chlorambucil) was associated with a higher risk of other cancers. For intermediate-stage CLL, there was no improvement in survival with a more intensive chemotherapy regimen (COP) compared to chlorambucil alone. For advanced-stage CLL, a more intensive chemotherapy regimen (CHOP) was confirmed to be effective. In a separate study, CHOP treatment was more effective than chlorambucil-prednisone for intermediate-stage CLL, but longer follow-up is needed to assess survival benefits. Overall, the study suggests that treatment for CLL needs to be tailored to the stage of the disease.
