Prospective comparison of patient tolerance to enteric-coated vs nonenteric-coated erythromycin.
Author: ChristensenD B, EllsworthA J, Volpone-McMahonM T
Original Abstract of the Article :
Erythromycin base and its salts are frequently used in clinical practice. The most frequent side effects of oral erythromycin preparations are gastrointestinal. Various salts and enteric coatings have been developed without adequate comparison in regard to gastrointestinal side effects. The overall ...See full text at original site

Enteric-Coated Erythromycin: A Comparative Study
The world of pharmaceuticals is a vast desert, with various formulations and delivery methods to navigate. This study, conducted in adults, investigated the gastrointestinal tolerance of two erythromycin formulations: Erythromycin Base Filmtab, a nonenteric-coated base tablet, and Eryc, a pelletized, encapsulated, enteric-coated base capsule. The authors compared the incidence of gastrointestinal side effects in 368 adults at two dosage levels (1 g/d and 2 g/d), seeking to determine if enteric coating provided any advantage in reducing these side effects.
Limited Benefit of Enteric Coating
This research found that enteric coating offered minimal protection from gastrointestinal adverse effects. The authors observed similar incidences of gastrointestinal side effects across both formulations, suggesting that enteric coating may not significantly improve patient tolerance to erythromycin.
Managing Erythromycin Side Effects
This study highlights the importance of understanding the potential side effects of medications. The authors' findings suggest that gastrointestinal side effects are a common occurrence with erythromycin, regardless of the formulation. Patients should be aware of these potential side effects and communicate any concerns with their healthcare providers.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
This study, like a map through a desert of drug formulations, reveals that enteric coating may not be the magic bullet for mitigating erythromycin's gastrointestinal side effects. It emphasizes the need for careful consideration of dosage and patient-specific factors when prescribing erythromycin.
