Overview

This review examines the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of different topical treatments for psoriasis, focusing on those available in the UK. Strong corticosteroids (alone or with vitamin D) were found to be the most effective treatments for both body and scalp psoriasis, while coal tar and retinoids were no better than a placebo. There were no significant differences in effectiveness between applying the same treatment once or twice daily, or between different combinations of strong corticosteroids and vitamin D. While there were no major differences in tolerability or side effects like thinning skin, more data are needed. Corticosteroids are highly effective for up to 8 weeks of continuous use and up to 52 weeks of intermittent use. Long-term data on the effectiveness and safety of topical treatments for psoriasis are limited.
