Overview

Ospemifene is a tissue-selective estrogen agonist/antagonist (SERM) that is effective in treating vulvar and vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal women. In an animal model of menopause, ospemifene increased vaginal weight and epithelial height more effectively than raloxifene. Ospemifene also upregulated progesterone receptors in the vaginal epithelium and stroma, confirming its estrogenic activity. However, ospemifene antagonized estrogen response element-mediated transactivation in breast cancer cells, demonstrating its anti-estrogenic activity.
