Original Abstract of the Article :
Olanzapine is the frequently prescribed drug in children and adolescents with bipolar disorder, but unfortunately it has metabolic side-effects. On the other hand, in a number of melatonin studies on sleep cycle, regulation of metabolic abnormalities has been reported. Therefore, we aimed to study e...See full text at original site

Melatonin: A Potential Aid in Managing Metabolic Side Effects of Olanzapine
Olanzapine, a commonly prescribed medication for bipolar disorder, can sometimes have unwelcome metabolic side effects. This study investigates the potential of melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone, to mitigate these side effects in adolescents with bipolar disorder. The researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the impact of melatonin on metabolic parameters in patients receiving olanzapine and lithium carbonate.
The findings suggest that melatonin may have a beneficial effect on metabolic side effects associated with olanzapine. While not statistically significant, the study observed a trend towards less increase in fasting blood sugar and triglyceride levels in the melatonin group compared to the placebo group, particularly in boys. Melatonin also significantly inhibited the rise in total cholesterol levels compared to placebo and slowed the increase in systolic blood pressure.
Melatonin and Olanzapine: Exploring Potential Synergies
This study provides preliminary evidence that melatonin may offer a potential strategy for managing metabolic side effects associated with olanzapine. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the optimal dosage and duration of melatonin treatment.
Navigating the Sands of Bipolar Disorder Treatment
Bipolar disorder is a challenging condition that requires careful management. This study underscores the importance of exploring potential therapeutic strategies to mitigate the side effects of medications used in bipolar disorder treatment. Further research into melatonin and other potential interventions may lead to improved treatment outcomes for individuals with bipolar disorder.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
This study provides promising insights into the potential benefits of melatonin in reducing metabolic side effects associated with olanzapine. While further research is needed, these findings suggest that melatonin may offer a valuable adjunct therapy for adolescents with bipolar disorder, helping to mitigate the metabolic impact of olanzapine treatment.
