Overview

This review summarizes the currently available medical treatment for endometriosis and focuses on the most recently proposed treatments, including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists, aromatase inhibitors (AIs) and the flexible extended combined oral contraceptive. While oral contraceptive pills and progestogens are effective for many patients, GnRH agonists, GnRH antagonists, and AIs are used for patients resistant to first-line therapy. These newer therapies are limited by their short-term use and high incidence of adverse effects.
