Overview

Glatiramer acetate is a common treatment for relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. However, it can cause serious skin reactions, including Nicolau Syndrome. In this case, a woman with multiple sclerosis developed recurrent Nicolau Syndrome while on glatiramer acetate treatment. The hemorrhagic patch necrotized and required local treatment as a deep second-degree burn with excision of dead skin tissue. Treatment with glatiramer acetate was permanently discontinued.
