Injectable Antipsychotics for Acute Psychosis: Levosulpiride vs. Haloperidol

The management of acute psychosis, characterized by severe disturbances in thought, perception, and behavior, often requires the use of injectable antipsychotics. This randomized, double-blind study compares the efficacy and safety of levosulpiride and haloperidol injections in patients with acute psychosis.

Haloperidol's Superior Efficacy

The results indicate that haloperidol was more effective than levosulpiride in reducing psychotic symptoms, aggression, and agitation in acute psychosis. However, haloperidol was associated with a higher incidence of extrapyramidal side effects, such as muscle stiffness and tremors, while levosulpiride was better tolerated in this regard.

Balancing Efficacy and Tolerability

The choice between levosulpiride and haloperidol injections for managing acute psychosis requires careful consideration of the individual patient's needs and risk factors. It's like choosing the best path through a desert – some routes may be faster, but others may be safer.

Dr.Camel's Conclusion

This study underscores the importance of balancing efficacy and tolerability when selecting antipsychotic medications for patients with acute psychosis. Careful assessment of individual patient characteristics and risk factors is crucial in determining the most appropriate treatment approach.
