Family Therapy: A Beacon of Hope for Adolescents After Self-Harm?
Self-harm is a concerning issue, particularly among adolescents. This pragmatic, multicentre, randomized controlled trial explored the effectiveness of systemic family therapy versus treatment as usual in reducing repeat self-harm among young people referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). The study involved 832 young people aged 11-17 years who had self-harmed at least twice. The results of the study, however, showed no significant difference in hospital attendance for repeated self-harm between the family therapy group and the treatment as usual group.
Family Therapy: A Promising but Uncertain Path for Adolescents with Self-Harm
The study's findings suggest that, while family therapy holds promise as an intervention for adolescents with self-harm, it did not demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in repeated self-harm compared to treatment as usual. This underscores the need for further research to identify effective interventions for this complex issue.
Navigating the Desert of Self-Harm: Seeking Effective Interventions
This research highlights the complexity of addressing self-harm in adolescents. It's like navigating a vast desert, where finding the right path requires ongoing exploration and innovation. The study's findings underscore the importance of continued research and exploring new and effective interventions for adolescents struggling with self-harm.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
This study provides valuable insights into the potential of family therapy for adolescents struggling with self-harm. While the results did not demonstrate a significant reduction in repeat self-harm, it's important to remember that the journey to recovery is often long and complex. Further research and exploration of alternative interventions are crucial to provide effective support for these young individuals.
