Barriers and Facilitators to Oral PrEP Use Among Transgender Women in New York City

This study investigates the barriers and facilitators to oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among transgender women in New York City. The study used four focus groups with 18 transgender women to explore their perceptions and experiences with PrEP. The study found that transgender women identified several barriers to PrEP use, including uncomfortable side effects, difficulty taking pills, stigma, exclusion from advertising campaigns, and lack of research specifically on transgender women and PrEP. The study also identified facilitators to PrEP use, such as reducing pill size, increasing the types of available HIV prevention products, and conducting more research on PrEP in transgender women.
