Cognitive Therapy for Non-Cardiac Chest Pain: Limited Evidence for Effectiveness

Non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP) is a common symptom that often leads to emergency department (ED) visits. This research investigated the effectiveness of a brief cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention in reducing re-presentations to the ED for NCCP. The authors conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing CBT to treatment as usual (TAU) in patients with NCCP.

Limited Effectiveness of Brief CBT for NCCP: A Need for Further Research

The study found no significant difference in ED visits or hospitalizations for NCCP between the CBT and TAU groups. While those with prior ED presentations for NCCP showed a short-term reduction in re-presentations at three months, this effect was not sustained at 12 months. The authors conclude that a brief CBT intervention is not recommended for unselected patients with NCCP and that further research is needed to explore alternative therapeutic approaches.

Navigating the Desert of Chest Pain: A Complex Landscape

This research highlights the complex nature of NCCP and the need for individualized approaches to treatment. While CBT may offer some benefits for certain patients, further research is necessary to develop effective and sustainable interventions for this challenging condition.

Dr.Camel's Conclusion

This study emphasizes the need for continued research to understand the effectiveness of CBT for NCCP. The findings suggest that a brief CBT intervention may not be sufficient for all patients, and alternative therapeutic strategies should be explored to improve treatment outcomes and minimize healthcare utilization.
