Immunological effects of dimethyl fumarate treatment in blood and CSF of patients with primary progressive MS.
Author: Holm HansenR, Højsgaard ChowH, SellebjergF, TalbotJ, von EssenM Rode
Original Abstract of the Article :
Dimethyl fumarate is an efficient therapy used widely in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). However, lacking effect of treatment has recently been reported in patients with primary progressive MS (PPMS) (Højsgaard Chow et al., 2021). In order to further analyze the imm...See full text at original site

Dimethyl Fumarate: Exploring Immunological Effects in Primary Progressive MS
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and debilitating autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. This study examines the immunological effects of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), a medication used to treat relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), in patients with primary progressive MS (PPMS). The researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 50 patients with PPMS who received either DMF or placebo. The results showed that DMF had significant immunomodulatory effects in the blood, suggesting that it may influence the immune system in a similar way to its effects in RRMS. However, the effects of DMF on the immune cells within the central nervous system (CNS) were limited.
DMF: A Potential Modulator of the Immune System
This study provides evidence that DMF may have immunomodulatory effects in patients with PPMS, similar to its effects in RRMS. The researchers found that DMF significantly altered the composition of immune cells in the blood, suggesting that it may play a role in modulating the immune response in PPMS.
DMF: Exploring the CNS Impact
This study highlights the need for further research to understand the specific effects of DMF on the immune cells within the CNS. The researchers found that DMF had limited effects on immune cells in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), suggesting that its impact on the CNS may be different from its effects on the peripheral immune system.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
Like a desert wind shifting the sands, DMF may alter the immune landscape in MS patients. This study sheds light on the potential of DMF to modulate the immune system, but further exploration is needed to understand its specific effects on the CNS and its potential as a therapy for PPMS.
