Saudi Registry of Cardiovascular Risk Factor Management in Hemodialysis Patients: The Results of SECRET-HD Study.
Author: FathallaAdel A, G Al-GhamdiSaeed M
Original Abstract of the Article :
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on hemodialysis (HD) present cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, which increase mortality rates but could be alleviated with proper medical care. The primary aims of this study are determining CV risk factor prevalence and medications prescribed for those patients...See full text at original site

Saudi Cardiovascular Risk Factors: A Desert Oasis of Information
In the vast desert of cardiovascular health, understanding risk factors is crucial. This research delves into the fascinating realm of cardiovascular risk factors in hemodialysis patients, specifically in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study, conducted across seven clinics and hospitals, employed a national, multicenter, non-interventional approach. It aimed to uncover the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in these patients and to explore the medications they are prescribed. The researchers meticulously collected data on two three-monthly visits, gathering information on risk factors, medications, and even the details of hemodialysis sessions.
A Comprehensive Look into Risk Factors and Medications
Imagine a desert oasis, where the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors is high. In this study, a staggering 99.7% of the 389 patients analyzed had at least one risk factor. Hypertension emerged as the most prevalent traditional risk factor, affecting 75% of patients, while CKD-mineral and bone disorder (MBD) and anemia were closely competing for the top spot among non-traditional risk factors. The researchers also observed that over 70% of patients were prescribed antihypertensives, erythropoietin, and phosphate binders. Iron supplements and Vitamin D were also commonly used.
Achieving Health Goals in the Hemodialysis Oasis
The study reveals that most patients achieved their target blood pressure (73.3%) and diabetes (64.8%) goals set at baseline. Around 50% successfully managed dyslipidemia, anemia, malnutrition, and hemostatic disorders. However, only 23% reached the desired goals for CKD-MBD. This suggests that while many aspects of cardiovascular risk factor management seem successful, achieving targets for bone disorders remains a challenge.
Hemodialysis in a Desert Setting
The researchers also examined the safety of hemodialysis procedures. Out of 12,852 sessions, 85% were complication-free. While extracorporeal thrombosis incidents occurred in 165 (44.2%) patients, thankfully none were severe. These findings suggest that hemodialysis is generally practiced safely in Saudi Arabia, and potential complications are effectively addressed.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
This study provides a valuable insight into the cardiovascular health of hemodialysis patients in Saudi Arabia, offering a glimpse into the complexities of their treatment. It highlights the need for continued research and improvements in managing specific risk factors, such as CKD-MBD, to optimize patient care and ensure a better quality of life for these individuals.
