Original Abstract of the Article :
Fluid accumulation in the form of pleural effusions and ascites may be attributed to a single etiology. Diagnosis depends on a thorough clinical history as well as fluid analysis. We present the case of a 60-year-old man with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) on dasatinib, recent right-sided ischemic s...See full text at original site

Dasatinib: A Potential Cause for Pleural Effusions and Ascites
This case report describes a 60-year-old man with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) who developed bilateral pleural effusions and ascites while on dasatinib treatment. Fluid analysis revealed exudative effusion in the pleural fluid and transudative collection in the ascitic fluid. After extensive investigations, the bilateral effusions were attributed to dasatinib therapy, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). The researchers suggest that dasatinib might also play a role in the worsening ascites, although the exact mechanism is unclear. This case report represents the first documented instance of a patient presenting with bilateral TKI-induced pleural effusions and concomitant ascites.
Dasatinib's Potential Side Effects: A Case for Vigilance
This report highlights the potential of dasatinib, a commonly used drug for treating CML, to cause serious side effects such as pleural effusions and ascites. While these side effects are not universally experienced, it's crucial for healthcare professionals to be aware of this potential and to monitor patients closely for any signs or symptoms.
Understanding the Complexities of Cancer Treatment
Cancer treatment is a delicate balancing act, often involving powerful medications with potential side effects. This case report serves as a reminder that the decision to start or continue a specific medication should be made in close consultation with a healthcare professional, considering the individual patient's needs and medical history.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
Just as the desert can be both beautiful and treacherous, cancer treatment can be both life-saving and challenging. Navigating this complex landscape requires careful observation and understanding. This case report emphasizes the importance of ongoing research to understand the full range of potential side effects associated with medications used in cancer treatment.
