Azithromycin: A Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic with Unexpected Benefits
Azithromycin is a commonly used antibiotic. Mass drug administration (MDA) of azithromycin has been used to combat trachoma and yaws, but its secondary effects are not well understood. This study systematically reviewed the secondary effects of azithromycin MDA using data from 34 studies. The review found that azithromycin MDA reduced child mortality, particularly when administered quarterly. While the effect of azithromycin MDA on malaria was weak, it was associated with a lower risk of respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and headache. The study also found that azithromycin MDA reduced the carriage of certain pathogenic organisms, but these effects were short-lived. The study did not find a clear association between azithromycin MDA and nutritional improvement in children.
