Original Abstract of the Article :
Nephropathic Cystinosis (NC), a rare disease characterised by intra-lysosomal accumulation of cystine, results in progressive kidney failure (KF). Compliance to lifelong oral cysteamine, the only therapy, is often compromised. The relationship between compliance and costs of NC has not been previous...See full text at original site

The Impact of Compliance on the Cost of Cystinosis Treatment
Nephropathic cystinosis (NC) is a rare genetic disorder that causes the accumulation of cystine in cells, leading to progressive kidney failure. This study examines the relationship between compliance to oral cysteamine treatment, the only available therapy for NC, and the cost of kidney failure treatment in the United Kingdom.
The researchers developed a model to evaluate the impact of compliance on lifetime direct costs of treating kidney failure in NC patients. They found that poor compliance to cysteamine treatment significantly increased the cost of managing kidney failure, highlighting the importance of adherence to therapy for managing this debilitating disease.
Improving Patient Adherence to Treatment
This study emphasizes the need for strategies to improve patient adherence to cysteamine treatment, potentially leading to better health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.
The Importance of Patient Education and Support
The study highlights the importance of patient education and support programs to encourage adherence to treatment and improve the management of NC.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
The journey of managing NC is a long and challenging one, requiring patients to navigate the desert of treatment adherence. This study reminds us that even with effective therapies, achieving optimal health outcomes hinges on consistent compliance. It underscores the importance of providing patients with the knowledge, support, and resources they need to adhere to their treatment plans and ultimately achieve a better quality of life.
