The in vitro activity of a new streptogramin, RP 59500, was compared with that of vancomycin and ciprofloxacin against 130 strains of S. aureus and 117 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci. RP 59500 showed similar antistaphylococcal activity to vancomycin, inhibiting all strains including methicillin-resistant ones. Unlike ciprofloxacin, the activity of RP 59500 remained unchanged regardless of methicillin resistance.
