Original Abstract of the Article :
There are few data available about changes in thyroid hormone profiles after hormone replacement therapy (HRT). We analyzed the effect of two different oral estrogens/progestins (E/P) associations on thyroid hormones and thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) levels in 14 postmenopausal normal women distr...See full text at original site

The Influence of Hormone Replacement Therapy on Thyroid Hormones in Postmenopausal Women
This study delves into the intriguing world of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and its effects on the thyroid gland in postmenopausal women. Imagine the thyroid gland as a bustling desert oasis, producing vital hormones that keep the body's metabolic processes humming along like a caravan of camels. This research, like a seasoned explorer mapping uncharted territory, investigates how two different types of oral estrogens/progestins (E/P) associations affect the thyroid hormone levels in postmenopausal women. The study, conducted over a year, involved 14 women who were randomly assigned to two groups. Both groups received daily doses of estradiol valeriante, but Group A received it alongside norethisterone acetate, while Group B received it with promegestone. The researchers meticulously measured the levels of various thyroid hormones, including thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and free T4 (fT4), as well as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG).
The results are as fascinating as a desert sunset. The study found that both groups experienced a significant increase in estradiol levels, with Group A exhibiting higher levels than Group B. Furthermore, both groups saw increases in T4 and TBG levels, but these increases remained within the normal range. The researchers observed a notable increase in T4 levels, a whopping 34% increase in Group A and a 20% increase in Group B. The increase in TBG was slightly significant for Group A (p < 0.02) with a trend observed in Group B (p = 0.08). Intriguingly, the researchers found that T3, fT4, and TSH levels remained unchanged and within the normal range.
The Significance of Free T4 and TSH
This research suggests that in postmenopausal women undergoing oral HRT, the levels of fT4 and TSH emerge as the most valuable tools for evaluating the thyroid axis status.
Navigating the Desert of Thyroid Function
This study, like a beacon in the vast desert of thyroid research, sheds light on the impact of HRT on thyroid function. The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring fT4 and TSH levels in postmenopausal women taking oral HRT. This information can empower both women and their healthcare providers to navigate the complexities of hormone replacement therapy with increased awareness and confidence.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
It seems that even in the desert of postmenopausal health, hormone replacement therapy can have an impact on the thyroid gland. This study provides valuable insights into the nuanced interactions between estrogen, progestins, and the thyroid. Remember, like a wise camel navigating the desert, it's essential to stay informed about the potential impacts of HRT and to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
