Acupuncture/acupressure for weight reduction? A systematic review.

This review of four placebo-controlled clinical trials on acupuncture and acupressure for weight loss found no clear evidence to support their effectiveness. While some studies suggest benefits, they suffer from significant methodological flaws and have contradictory results. The two more rigorous trials found no effect on body weight. Effects of repeated sensory stimulation sessions (electro-acupuncture) on skin temperature in chronic pain patients.

This study of 12 patients with chronic pain found that electro-acupuncture (EA) caused a decrease in skin temperature during the first treatment session, possibly due to increased sympathetic activity. However, after four weeks of EA treatments, a significant increase in skin temperature was observed, suggesting a possible decrease in sympathetic activity and/or the release of vasodilating substances. While blood pressure, heart rate and pain intensity did not change significantly, the difference in temperature effects before and after treatment was significant. These findings suggest that EA may have a long-term impact on the body's response to pain.
