Major Research Findings

Alfuzosin, an α1-adrenergic antagonist, has been shown to be effective in treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in several studies. 8 Alfuzosin improves bladder outlet obstruction and increases urine flow. 10 The mechanism of action of alfuzosin involves reducing urethral pressure. 26 Moreover, alfuzosin has been found to promote expulsion of ureteral stones and reduce pain. 17

Alfuzosin may have a stronger effect when combined with a potent inhibitor of CYP3A4. 18 Additionally, alfuzosin, as an α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist, may cause gastrointestinal symptoms in some patients. 15
