Major Research Findings

Bupropion is a drug widely used for depression and smoking cessation. However, some side effects of bupropion have been reported. 3 suggests that bupropion is a less side-effecting and effective alternative to other antidepressants such as serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and mirtazapine in the treatment of depression in older adults. 10 says that bupropion is an effective drug for the treatment of nicotine dependence. 12 also refers to the possibility that bupropion could be used as a treatment for treatment-resistant depression. 16 reports that bupropion may cause dystonia.

Reasons for Side Effects

The side effects of bupropion are thought to be caused by inhibiting the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters that play an important role in mood, concentration, and sleep. It is believed that bupropion inhibits the reuptake of these neurotransmitters, changing the function of the nervous system, which in turn causes various side effects.
