Original Abstract of the Article

Major Findings

A review of case series in drug safety showed that case series are a cornerstone of drug safety research, however, the characteristics of case series published in the literature remain poorly examined. The review determined the characteristics and quality of case series addressing drug safety published between January 1, 2003 and July 15, 2009, using criteria from the US FDA Pharmacovigilance Guidance 2005.

A comprehensive meta-analysis of colchicine adverse events for cardiovascular diseases in 14,188 patients from 21 randomized controlled trials found that colchicine is emerging as a treatment for cardiovascular diseases. However, concerns about side effects, especially gastrointestinal, limit its use. 1

Reasons for Side Effects

A review of case series in drug safety showed that case series are a cornerstone of drug safety research, however, the characteristics of case series published in the literature remain poorly examined.

Common Side Effects

Skin

A review of case series in drug safety found that skin side effects were the most common, accounting for 18.5% of case series.

Circulatory System

A review of case series in drug safety found that circulatory system side effects were the second most common, accounting for 13.8% of case series.

Gastrointestinal

Colchicine is emerging as a treatment for cardiovascular diseases, however, concerns about side effects, especially gastrointestinal, limit its use. 1

Side Effects Management
