Major Findings

Desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, has been shown to have a variety of effects, including on heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep patterns. 1 found that desipramine treatment in young women with bulimia nervosa was associated with significant increases in pulse, reclining systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and orthostatic hypotension. These effects were evident within the first week of treatment and persisted for 5 weeks. The mean increases in reclining systolic and diastolic pressures were about 10 mm Hg. However, after two months of treatment, blood pressure effects subsided while pulse rate remained elevated. This suggests that the cardiovascular effects of tricyclic antidepressants might be age-dependent.

3 studied the effects of combining desipramine with yohimbine, an alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist, in patients with refractory depression.
