Original Abstract of the Article

Major Findings

Several studies have shown that diethylpropion is more effective in weight loss than placebo. 15 , 9 , 18 , 13 However, some studies have found that diethylpropion is less effective in weight loss compared to fenfluramine or mazindol. 11 , 18 These studies indicate that diethylpropion is beneficial for short-term weight loss, but its long-term safety remains uncertain. 3 Therefore, careful consideration is required for long-term use of diethylpropion.

Reasons for Side Effects

Diethylpropion is a medication that suppresses appetite and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. 17 This action can lead to various side effects.

Common Side Effects

Nervous System

As diethylpropion affects the central nervous system, side effects related to the nervous system such as anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, headache, and decreased concentration have been reported. 13 , 17 In rare cases, psychological symptoms like depression, hallucinations, and delusions may occur. 7

Cardiovascular System

Because diethylpropion stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, side effects on the cardiovascular system like palpitations, tachycardia, and increased blood pressure have been reported. 9 , 17 However, these side effects may improve with weight loss. 9

Digestive System

Diethylpropion can also cause digestive system side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, and loss of appetite. 17 Stomach pain and nausea may also occur.

Other

Other side effects such as sweating, fatigue, and rash have been reported. 17

Countermeasures for Side Effects

Nervous System

If you experience side effects on the nervous system, discontinue taking diethylpropion or consult your doctor. 17 Ensure adequate sleep and rest, and try to avoid mental stress.

Cardiovascular System

If you experience cardiovascular side effects, stop taking diethylpropion and consult your doctor. 17 Regularly monitor your blood pressure and heart rate and report any abnormalities to your doctor.

Digestive System

If you experience side effects on the digestive system, make adjustments to your diet, drink plenty of fluids, and review your lifestyle habits. 17 Consult your doctor if symptoms persist.

Comparison Among Studies

Commonalities in Studies

Many studies have shown that diethylpropion is more effective in weight loss than placebo. 15 , 9 , 18 , 13 It is also common across studies that diethylpropion can cause side effects involving the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and digestive system. 17

Differences in Studies

The weight loss effect of diethylpropion varies depending on the study. 11 , 18 The frequency and types of side effects also differ between studies. 17

Cautions Regarding Application to Real Life

Diethylpropion is an effective drug for short-term weight loss, but its long-term safety remains unconfirmed. 3 Therefore, if taking diethylpropion, follow your doctor's instructions and avoid stopping or modifying the dosage without their guidance.

Limitations of Current Research

Research on the long-term safety of diethylpropion is insufficient. 3 Further research is needed on the mechanisms by which diethylpropion causes side effects and on effective methods for reducing side effects.

Future Research Directions

Further research is required on the long-term safety of diethylpropion, elucidating the mechanisms by which side effects occur, and effective methods for minimizing side effects.

Conclusion

Diethylpropion is an effective drug for short-term weight loss, but its long-term safety remains unconfirmed. 3 If taking diethylpropion, adhere to your doctor's instructions and consult them immediately if you experience any side effects.
