Major Research Findings

Multiple studies have shown that flunisolide nasal spray is effective in reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis. 17 , 23 , 5 , 8 , 21 , 2 , 26 , 1 , 12 , 3 , 6 , 18 , 4 , 24 , 11 , 15 , 7 , 9 , , 13 These studies have reported that symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose were alleviated, leading to improved quality of life. Flunisolide has also been shown to suppress inflammation of the nasal mucosa and reduce the number of eosinophils in the nasal mucosa. 8 Flunisolide nasal spray has been shown to be effective in children with seasonal allergic rhinitis. 23 , 8 , 3 Furthermore, flunisolide has been shown to prevent the recurrence of nasal polyps after surgery. 13

A study of 50 patients with perennial allergic rhinitis found that flunisolide nasal spray (200 micrograms daily) was significantly more effective than a placebo in reducing symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, and improving sleep and daily life. Both patients and doctors preferred the flunisolide spray. Minor side effects were reported during both placebo and flunisolide phases, and no evidence of adrenal suppression was observed.
