Original Abstract of the Article

Main Research Findings

Flunisolide nasal spray has been shown to be effective in preventing nasal polyp recurrence, treating seasonal allergic rhinitis, and treating perennial allergic rhinitis in several studies. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 These studies have shown that flunisolide is significantly more effective than placebo. Flunisolide has also been shown to alleviate nasal symptoms and improve quality of life. 2 , 3

Reasons for Side Effects

The side effects of flunisolide nasal spray are thought to be due to irritation of the nasal mucosa or, rarely, systemic effects. 4 Irritation of the nasal mucosa is caused by flunisolide being a steroid drug, one of its mechanisms of action being to suppress inflammation, so it acts directly on the nasal mucosa. Systemic effects, though rare, include adrenal suppression. 2 This could occur because flunisolide is absorbed from the nasal mucosa, travels through the bloodstream, and reaches the whole body.

Common Side Effects

Nasal Irritation

The most common side effect of flunisolide nasal spray is nasal irritation. 4 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 , 3 This is due to irritation of the nasal mucosa, and may manifest as nasal burning, stinging, or pain. 6

Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds may occur with the use of flunisolide nasal spray. 8 This may be caused by flunisolide drying out the nasal mucosa.

Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion may occur with the use of flunisolide nasal spray. 8 This may be caused by flunisolide suppressing swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Adrenal Suppression

Long-term use of flunisolide nasal spray may suppress the adrenal cortex. 2 This could occur because flunisolide is absorbed from the nasal mucosa, travels through the bloodstream, and reaches the whole body. The adrenal cortex is involved in the production of cortisol, a stress hormone, and suppression of its function can lead to poor health and weakened immunity.

Side Effects Management

Nasal Irritation

If you experience nasal irritation, you may be able to reduce it by washing your nasal passages before using the nasal spray, or by reducing the amount of nasal spray you use. 4

Nosebleeds

If you experience nosebleeds, gently pinch your nose to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop, consult your doctor.

Nasal Congestion

If you experience nasal congestion, washing your nasal passages may help alleviate it.

Comparison Between Studies

Commonalities

Multiple studies have shown that flunisolide nasal spray is effective in reducing nasal symptoms. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12

Differences

The effectiveness and severity of side effects of flunisolide nasal spray may vary between studies. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 This is thought to be due to differences in the study participants and methodologies.

Points to Note Regarding Application in Real Life

It is important to use flunisolide nasal spray as directed by your doctor. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 In particular, be careful not to change the dosage or duration of use without consulting a doctor. Also, pregnant women and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use.

Limitations of Current Research

There has not been enough research on the long-term effects of flunisolide nasal spray. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 Therefore, further research is needed on the possibility of side effects from long-term use.

Future Research Directions

Research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of flunisolide nasal spray and to compare it with other treatment methods. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 Also, research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms of side effects of flunisolide nasal spray.

Conclusion

Flunisolide nasal spray has been shown to be an effective medication for treating nasal polyps and allergic rhinitis. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 However, the possibility of side effects should also be considered. 8 , 4 , 2 , 1 , 3 , 5 , 9 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 12 When considering the use of flunisolide nasal spray, it is important to consult your doctor and obtain the appropriate information.
