It is particularly important during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus. 4 Studies have shown that folic acid supplementation can reduce the risk of neural tube defects by up to 70%. 18 However, there are also concerns about the potential negative effects of folic acid supplementation, such as masking vitamin B12 deficiency, 9 increasing the risk of certain cancers, 29 and disturbing intracellular one-carbon metabolism. 33 The optimal dose and form of folic acid supplementation are still being debated. 20 , 26 8 Studies have also shown that folic acid supplementation can lower homocysteine levels, 6 , 3 , 15 which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. 4 However, the effects of folic acid supplementation on cardiovascular outcomes are not entirely clear. 28 , 25
