Original Abstract of the Article

Main Research Findings

Ivabradine is a new type of drug that acts on the heart's pacemaker cells and has the effect of lowering the heart rate. 16 , 14 , 18 , 7 Studies have shown that ivabradine is effective in treating tachycardia after heart transplantation. 16 It is also used to treat stable angina, and it has been shown to be well-tolerated with fewer side effects compared to beta-blockers. 17 , 18 , 7 In addition, it is expected to be effective in treating postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. 9 , 12 , 10 Ivabradine only lowers the heart rate, so it has little effect on myocardial contractility or blood vessels. 18 , 12

Reasons for Side Effects

Ivabradine lowers the heart rate by acting on the heart's pacemaker cells, but this effect can cause side effects. 15

Common Side Effects

Bradycardia

The most common side effect of ivabradine is bradycardia. 1 , 2 , 18 Ivabradine lowers the heart rate by inhibiting the heart's pacemaker cells, which can make it more likely to develop bradycardia. 1 , 15 , 7 Bradycardia can cause symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. 1 The risk of bradycardia is particularly high in older adults and people with heart disease. 2 In severe cases, a heart pacemaker may be required. 1

Visual Disturbances

Ivabradine can cause visual disturbances. 1 , 18 Visual disturbances can manifest as blurry vision, sensitivity to light, or difficulty seeing colors. 1 Visual disturbances usually resolve when ivabradine use is discontinued. 1

Other Side Effects

In addition to bradycardia and visual disturbances, ivabradine can cause side effects such as headache, indigestion, dizziness, and fatigue. 1 , 18 These side effects are usually mild and disappear over time. 1 However, if these side effects are severe or persistent, consult your doctor. 1

Side Effect Countermeasures

Bradycardia

If you experience symptoms of bradycardia, consult your doctor. 1 Your doctor will make adjustments such as reducing or discontinuing ivabradine. 1 If bradycardia is severe, a heart pacemaker may be required. 1

Visual Disturbances

If you experience symptoms of visual disturbances, consult your doctor. 1 Visual disturbances usually resolve when ivabradine use is discontinued. 1

Other Side Effects

If you experience other side effects, consult your doctor. 1 Your doctor will identify the cause of the side effect and take appropriate action. 1

Comparison Between Studies

Commonalities Between Studies

Many studies have shown that ivabradine has the effect of lowering the heart rate and has fewer side effects compared to beta-blockers. 16 , 17 , 18 , 7

Differences Between Studies

There are differences in the effects and side effects of ivabradine depending on the study. 16 , 18 For example, in patients after heart transplantation, ivabradine has been shown to be more effective in treating tachycardia than beta-blockers. 16 On the other hand, in patients with stable angina, ivabradine has been shown to have fewer side effects compared to beta-blockers. 17 , 18 Also, ivabradine can cause visual disturbances, but they usually resolve when ivabradine use is discontinued. 1 , 18

Things to Note When Applying to Real Life

Ivabradine has the effect of lowering the heart rate, so people with heart disease or high blood pressure should consult their doctor before taking it. 1 Also, because ivabradine can cause visual disturbances, be careful when driving or operating machinery. 1 If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath while taking ivabradine, consult your doctor. 1 Furthermore, because ivabradine can interact with other drugs, tell your doctor about all the drugs you are currently taking. 1

Limitations of Current Research

Ivabradine is a relatively new drug, and there is not enough data yet on its long-term effects. 1 Also, there are still some unknown aspects about the side effects of ivabradine. 1

Future Research Directions

More research needs to be conducted on the long-term effects and side effects of ivabradine. 1 Research is also needed to maximize the effects of ivabradine while minimizing side effects. 1

Conclusion

Ivabradine has been shown to be effective in lowering the heart rate and to have fewer side effects compared to beta-blockers. 16 , 17 , 18 , 7 However, ivabradine can cause side effects such as bradycardia and visual disturbances. 1 , 18 If you are considering taking ivabradine, consult your doctor. 1
