Main Research Findings

Ivabradine is a new type of drug that acts on the heart's pacemaker cells and has the effect of lowering the heart rate. 16 , 14 , 18 , 7 Studies have shown that ivabradine is effective in treating tachycardia after heart transplantation. 16 It is also used to treat stable angina, and it has been shown to be well-tolerated with fewer side effects compared to beta-blockers. 17 , 18 , 7 In addition, it is expected to be effective in treating postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. 9 , 12 , 10 Ivabradine only lowers the heart rate, so it has little effect on myocardial contractility or blood vessels. 18 , 12

Reasons for Side Effects

Ivabradine lowers the heart rate by acting on the heart's pacemaker cells, but this effect can cause side effects. 15

Common Side Effects

Bradycardia

The most common side effect of ivabradine is bradycardia. 1 , 2 , 18 Ivabradine lowers the heart rate by inhibiting the heart's pacemaker cells, which can make it more likely to develop bradycardia. 1 , 15 , 7 Bradycardia can cause symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. 1 The risk of bradycardia is particularly high in older adults and people with heart disease. 2 In severe cases, a heart pacemaker may be required. 1

Visual Disturbances

Ivabradine can cause visual disturbances. 1 , 18 Visual disturbances can manifest as blurry vision, sensitivity to light, or difficulty seeing colors. 1 Visual disturbances usually resolve when ivabradine use is discontinued. 1

Other Side Effects

In addition to bradycardia and visual disturbances, ivabradine can cause side effects such as headache, indigestion, dizziness, and fatigue. 1 , 18 These side effects are usually mild and disappear over time. 1 However, if these side effects are severe or persistent, consult your doctor. 1
