Major research findings
Montelukast is a widely used medication for asthma and allergic rhinitis. However, recent studies have suggested that montelukast may cause neuropsychiatric side effects. 15 , 18 , 12 , 1 These side effects have been reported in children and adults who took montelukast, and in severe cases, there are concerns that they could lead to suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. 19 , 8 , 5
Neuropsychiatric side effects of montelukast often appear within a few weeks of starting the medication, but may also appear for the first time after several years. 12 , 7 These side effects can also affect children's growth and development and require special attention. 13
Reasons for side effects
The exact mechanism by which montelukast causes neuropsychiatric side effects is not yet fully understood. However, it has been suggested that montelukast may disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. 1 Montelukast may also affect brain growth and development, which may cause side effects. 11
Common side effects
Sleep disorders
The most common side effect reported for montelukast is sleep disorders. 12 , 10 Specifically, insomnia, nightmares, and night terrors. 9
Mood changes
Taking montelukast can make you feel depressed, irritable, or angry. 12 It can also increase the risk of serious mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders, and suicidal thoughts. 15 , 8
Behavioral abnormalities
Taking montelukast can cause behavioral abnormalities such as restlessness, hyperactivity, and aggression. 12 2
Hallucinations
Taking montelukast can cause hallucinations and delusions. 20
Other side effects
Taking montelukast can cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, and rash. 10
Countermeasures for side effects
Sleep disorders
If you experience sleep disorders, talk to your doctor and adjust the dose of montelukast or switch to another medication. 17
Mood changes
If you experience mood changes, talk to your doctor and get treatment for mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety disorders. 17
Behavioral abnormalities
If you experience behavioral abnormalities, talk to your doctor and you may need to stop taking montelukast. 17
Hallucinations
If you experience hallucinations or delusions, see a doctor immediately. 17
Comparison between studies
Commonalities of studies
Many studies have shown that montelukast may cause neuropsychiatric side effects. 15 , 18 , 12 , 1
Differences in studies
There are variations between studies in terms of the risk of side effects of montelukast and the frequency with which side effects occur. 12 4 Some studies suggest that side effects of montelukast may be more common in certain age groups or genders. 12 , 3
Points to note about applying to real life
Montelukast is an effective medication, but it may cause neuropsychiatric side effects. 18 It is important to be aware of any changes in your body or mind while taking montelukast and consult a doctor immediately if you feel anything unusual. 19
Limitations of current research
Research on the neuropsychiatric side effects of montelukast is still insufficient. 4 In particular, the mechanism by which montelukast causes these side effects is not fully understood. 1 More research is needed to assess the risk of montelukast side effects. 4
Future research directions
Research on the neuropsychiatric side effects of montelukast should focus on the following points. 1
- Elucidate the mechanism by which montelukast causes neuropsychiatric side effects.
- More accurately assess the risk of montelukast side effects.
- Develop methods to prevent or reduce side effects of montelukast.
Conclusion
Montelukast is an effective medication, but it may cause neuropsychiatric side effects. 17 It is important to be aware of any changes in your body or mind while taking montelukast and consult a doctor immediately if you feel anything unusual. 19 Research on the neuropsychiatric side effects of montelukast is still insufficient. 4 More research is needed in the future. 1
