Original Abstract of the Article

Main Research Findings

Acupuncture has been suggested to be effective for symptoms such as dizziness ( 20 ), migraine ( 53 ), insomnia ( 72 ), menopausal symptoms ( 70 ), obesity ( 28 ), asthma ( 55 ), facial spasm ( 54 ), claustrophobia ( 66 ), chronic low back pain ( 47 ), and cognitive impairment after stroke ( 14 ). Furthermore, acupuncture may improve athletic performance ( 21 ), chemotherapy-induced nausea (), labor pain ( 48 ), and functional dyspepsia ( 59 ).

However, some studies have not clearly determined whether the effects of acupuncture are due to placebo effects or specific effects of acupuncture. Sham acupuncture can have similar effects to real acupuncture in some cases ( 75 ), suggesting that nonspecific effects of acupuncture may be important.

Benefits and Risks

Benefits Summary

Research suggests that acupuncture may be beneficial for improving a variety of symptoms. In particular, it may be effective for improving dizziness, migraine, insomnia, menopausal symptoms, obesity, asthma, facial spasms, claustrophobia, chronic low back pain, and cognitive impairment after stroke. It may also be beneficial for improving athletic performance, chemotherapy-induced nausea, labor pain, and functional dyspepsia.

Risk Summary

Acupuncture is generally considered a safe treatment ( 15 ). However, there are risks of infection and needle injury. It is also important to note the possibility of placebo effects and the fact that specific effects have not been proven.

Comparison Between Studies

Similarities Between Studies

Many studies have suggested that acupuncture is more effective than placebo or standard treatment for improving symptoms.

Differences Between Studies

The types of needles, treatment methods, and symptoms targeted vary depending on the study. Therefore, it is difficult to directly compare the results of the studies. It is also necessary to consider the possibility that the magnitude of the placebo effect may vary depending on the study.

Consistency and Contradictions in Results

There are both consistencies and contradictions in research findings on the effectiveness of acupuncture. While many studies have suggested effectiveness, some studies have not been able to prove specific effects, and it has also been pointed out that it is difficult to distinguish from placebo effects.

Points to Note Regarding Application in Real Life

Acupuncture is not a medically recognized treatment. Therefore, it is important to perform it under the guidance of a qualified professional such as a doctor or acupuncturist. Also, acupuncture does not work for everyone. It may not be effective depending on the symptoms and constitution.

Limitations of Current Research

Research on the effectiveness of acupuncture is still not sufficient. In particular, research is lacking that distinguishes between placebo effects and proves specific effects.

Future Research Directions

To clarify the effectiveness of acupuncture, research that clearly distinguishes between placebo effects and proves specific effects is needed. Research to examine the effects on different symptoms and constitutions is also necessary.

Conclusion

Acupuncture is a potential treatment that may be beneficial for improving a variety of symptoms. However, it is not a medically recognized treatment, so it is important to perform it under the guidance of a professional. Future research is expected to clarify the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture.
