Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Netarsudil ophthalmic solution has been shown to be effective in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. 7 , 11 . It is a Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitor, which works by increasing aqueous humor outflow through the trabecular meshwork. 11 . Netarsudil has also been shown to be non-inferior to timolol in lowering IOP. 6 , 4 The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. 11 . In addition to its effectiveness in humans, netarsudil has also been shown to be effective in lowering IOP in dogs, both with and without glaucoma. 14 , 5 .

Benefits and Risks

Benefits Summary

Netarsudil ophthalmic solution is a safe and effective treatment for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. 7 , 11 . It has been shown to be non-inferior to timolol in lowering IOP. 6 , 4 . It is convenient to use, as it only needs to be administered once daily. 11 .

Risks Summary

Netarsudil can cause side effects, such as conjunctival hyperemia (redness of the eye). 9 , 12 . In some cases, it may also delay eyelid wound healing. 13 .

Comparison Across Studies

Similarities Across Studies

Multiple studies have shown that netarsudil ophthalmic solution is effective in lowering IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. 7 , 11 , 6 , 4 . The studies also show that netarsudil is non-inferior to timolol in lowering IOP. 6 , 4 .

Differences Across Studies

There are some differences in the findings across studies. For example, one study found that netarsudil is effective in lowering IOP in dogs with normal IOP. 14 . Another study found that netarsudil can cause conjunctival hyperemia. 9 . These differences may be due to the different study designs or the characteristics of the participants.

Consistency and Contradictions in Results

While multiple studies show that netarsudil is effective in lowering IOP, there are some contradictions regarding side effects. This may be due to variations in study design and participant characteristics. More research is needed to further evaluate the safety of netarsudil.

Considerations for Real-World Application

While netarsudil is effective in lowering IOP, it is important to be aware of potential side effects. Conjunctival hyperemia is a common side effect, and in some cases, netarsudil can delay eyelid wound healing. 9 , 12 , 13 . Therefore, it is important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully and report any side effects to your doctor immediately.

Limitations of Current Research

The research on netarsudil ophthalmic solution is still limited. Further research is needed to assess long-term safety, evaluate its effectiveness in different types of glaucoma, and understand its interaction with other medications.

Future Research Directions

Future research on netarsudil should focus on long-term safety, effectiveness in different types of glaucoma, and drug interactions. Additional studies are also needed to better understand its mechanism of action and any potential benefits beyond lowering IOP.

Conclusion

Netarsudil ophthalmic solution is a promising new treatment for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It is effective in lowering IOP and has been shown to be safe and well-tolerated. 7 , 11 . However, like all medications, it has potential side effects, so it is important to discuss any concerns with your doctor. More research is needed to further understand its long-term effects and potential benefits for different types of glaucoma.
