Major research findings

Polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350) is a widely used medication for treating constipation and bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. Various studies have revealed many insights into the safety and efficacy of PEG 3350.

PEG 3350 has been reported in many studies to be an effective medication for the treatment of constipation. 19 reports the results of a two-week double-blind placebo-controlled study suggesting that PEG 3350 is effective in treating chronic constipation. 12 is a case report suggesting that PEG 3350 is effective in treating constipation in dialysis patients. Meanwhile, PEG 3350 has been shown to be effective not only in the treatment of constipation but also in bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. 28 is a study comparing the effectiveness of PEG 3350 and other bowel cleansers, suggesting that PEG 3350 is effective. 3 is a study suggesting that high-dose PEG 3350 is effective and safe for patients who have had inadequate bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. In addition, 21 is a study comparing various bowel cleansers, suggesting that PEG 3350 is effective.

This case report describes a 3-year-old girl who ingested part of an alkali battery and was treated with oral polyethylene glycol electrolyte (PEG-3350) solution for bowel irrigation. While PEG-3350 is generally considered safe for bowel emptying, the patient developed allergic reactions, suggesting a rare adverse effect. This is the first reported case of allergic reaction to PEG-3350 in a pediatric patient.
