Original Abstract of the Article

Major Research Findings

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent and potentially debilitating condition for mothers and their children. 11 While treatment for PPD can improve a mother’s depressive symptoms, research shows that it may not always be enough to improve the developing mother-child relationship. 11 This suggests that treatment approaches need to target the mother-infant relationship in addition to addressing the mother’s depressive symptoms. 11

A range of treatment options are available for PPD, including psychotherapy (such as interpersonal therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy), medication (such as antidepressants), hormone therapy, omega-3 fatty acid supplements, traditional Chinese medicine, home visitation programs, and telephone or online-based therapies. 16 , 38 However, it’s essential to choose a treatment that is tailored to the individual mother’s needs and circumstances. 26

Treatment Summary

A variety of treatments have been studied for postpartum depression, including: 11 , 16 , 18 , 2 , 19 , 13 , 21 , 17 , 33 , 38
