Major Findings

Pravastatin, a type of statin, is a widely used drug to lower cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia. 13 While effective in cholesterol reduction, pravastatin may cause several side effects. 13 These include muscle pain and weakness, liver problems, and skin rashes. 15 For pregnant women, pravastatin may pose potential risks to the fetus. 10 Additionally, interactions with other medications can increase the risk of side effects. 14

Reasons for Side Effects

Pravastatin side effects are influenced by how the drug is metabolized and acts in the body. 17 The liver metabolizes pravastatin, which then inhibits cholesterol synthesis. 17 This inhibition can affect tissues like muscle and liver cells, leading to potential side effects. 13 Furthermore, pravastatin can affect the metabolism of other drugs. 14 Therefore, it is essential to be cautious of drug interactions when taking pravastatin.
