Main Research Findings

Salsalate is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Multiple studies have shown that salsalate is generally well-tolerated and effective in treating arthritic pain. 6 , 7 , 3 , 4 , 8 , 5 . In particular, research indicates that salsalate is associated with fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to other NSAIDs. 6 , 7 , 3 , 4 , 8 , 5 . Furthermore, salsalate has shown potential benefits in preventing and treating diabetes and metabolic syndrome. 10 , 16 , 12 , 14 , 9 .

Reason for Side Effects

Salsalate, unlike many other NSAIDs, doesn't directly inhibit prostaglandin production. Instead, it works by inhibiting neutrophil activation, which is thought to be a key mechanism in inflammation. 7 .
