Main Research Findings

Tiagabine is a new antiepileptic drug that works by blocking the uptake of GABA in neurons and glial cells. 10 Tiagabine is effective for the treatment of partial seizures. 25 It has been suggested that tiagabine is effective as an add-on therapy for drug-resistant partial seizures. 9 Tiagabine has been shown to be effective for the treatment of partial seizures without affecting cognitive function. 22 However, tiagabine may increase the risk of nonconvulsive status (7.8%). 1 Tiagabine may increase the risk of depression in patients with epilepsy. 1 Tiagabine is a promising drug for the treatment of bipolar disorder. 13 Tiagabine may be effective for the treatment of anxiety disorders. 14 Tiagabine is promising as a new strategy in the treatment of panic disorder. 3 Tiagabine was not effective in treating spasticity in children with cerebral palsy. 15 Tiagabine did not affect the effects of cannabis in daily cannabis users. 18
