Main Research Findings

The studies on ziv-aflibercept injection, also known as zidovudine, have revealed various side effects associated with its use in treating HIV infection. A multicenter study 2 reported that 96% of the participants experienced adverse effects, with the most common being nausea (64%), fatigue (55%), and headache (49%). These side effects were generally self-limited but tended to reappear briefly with each dose increase. A decrease in hemoglobin levels was observed shortly after initiating treatment, which was not dose-dependent and quickly reversed upon discontinuation of treatment. 2 3 Additionally, a decrease in red blood cell count, an increase in mean cell volume, and a decrease in granulocyte count developed early on in a dose-independent manner, partially reversing during the washout phase. 2 The decrease in reticulocyte count was dose-related between 600 mg/day and 900 mg/day, with no further change when the dose was increased to 1200 mg/day. 2 Bone marrow changes occurred rapidly, demonstrated by megaloblastosis in 95% of the 65 specimens at week 18. 2 . Another study 3 found that the mortality rate among AIDS patients receiving ziv-aflibercept injection was significantly lower compared to historical controls. It also observed a significant increase in the number of CD4+ cells during treatment. Additionally, an increase in MCV and a decrease in neutrophil count were observed in almost all patients.
