Ankylosing Spondylitis: Finding Relief in the Spa
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine, can significantly impact quality of life. This research explores the potential benefits of combined spa-exercise therapy for individuals with AS, a treatment approach that combines relaxation and physical activity.
A Spa-Based Solution for Ankylosing Spondylitis
The study involved 120 patients with AS who were randomly assigned to three groups: two spa-exercise therapy groups and a control group. The spa-exercise therapy groups participated in three weeks of comprehensive treatment, including group physical exercises, walking, hydrotherapy, sports, and visits to either a specific therapeutic mine (Gasteiner Heilstollen) or a sauna. The control group continued with their usual drug treatment and weekly group physical therapy. The primary outcomes measured included functional ability, overall well-being, pain, and morning stiffness.
A Spa-Based Solution for Ankylosing Spondylitis
The study found that both spa-exercise therapy groups showed significant improvements compared to the control group. The benefits persisted for at least 40 weeks, suggesting that this approach can provide long-term relief from AS symptoms. The study also revealed that the spa-exercise therapy group that visited the Gasteiner Heilstollen showed greater improvement than the other spa-exercise therapy group.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
This research suggests that a three-week course of combined spa-exercise therapy can be an effective treatment option for individuals with AS. It provides valuable insights into the potential benefits of combining relaxation and physical activity in managing AS symptoms. The study also highlights the need for further research to explore the potential benefits of specific spa treatments, such as visiting the Gasteiner Heilstollen, in managing AS.
