Overview

This review analyzed 21 clinical studies on statin medications used for high cholesterol. While all statins do not appear to be equally effective in reducing cardiovascular events, pravastatin was the only one shown to reduce events in both primary and secondary prevention. Pravastatin 40 mg daily may be the best choice for patients with moderate high cholesterol and coronary heart disease risk, while simvastatin 80 mg nightly could be the best option for those with severe high cholesterol requiring higher doses.
