Calcipotriol vs. Coal Tar: A Race Through the Desert of Psoriasis
Psoriasis, a chronic skin condition, can be a challenging desert to navigate. This study pits two common topical treatments, calcipotriol and coal tar, against each other in a race to alleviate the symptoms of stable plaque psoriasis (SPP). The researchers conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blinded study involving 36 patients with SPP. The study compared the efficacy and safety of the two treatments, analyzing the reduction in the severity of erythema, scaling, and induration (ESI score). The results suggest that calcipotriol may offer a faster initial response and improved cosmetic acceptability, while coal tar demonstrates comparable efficacy over the long term.
