What's new in psoriasis? Analysis of the clinical significance of systematic reviews on psoriasis published in 2007 and 2008.

Overview

This review of psoriasis research found that some traditional treatments are as effective as newer biologic treatments. Among biologic treatments, infliximab appears to be most effective for short-term treatment, followed by etanercept (50 mg twice weekly), etanercept (25 mg twice weekly), efalizumab, and alefacept. Biologics have more side effects than placebo, except for etanercept at both doses. More research is needed to compare biologic treatments directly and to assess their long-term safety. Psoriasis can be triggered or worsen by TNF-inhibiting medications. Switching to a different TNF inhibitor is recommended, and only stopping treatment is recommended if psoriasis is severe and intolerable. More research is needed to evaluate the best way to screen and monitor patients on biologic treatments, and to determine the effectiveness of psychological interventions for psoriasis.
