This study compared different chemotherapy regimens for multiple myeloma in 614 patients. The study found that initial levels of a protein called beta-2 microglobulin were the strongest predictor of survival. There was no significant difference in effectiveness or side effects between different chemotherapy schedules. A subsequent study comparing an additional year of chemotherapy to radiation therapy with additional chemotherapy found that chemotherapy resulted in significantly longer relapse-free survival and overall survival. Radiation therapy was not effective in treating patients who did not respond to initial chemotherapy. The study concludes that radiation therapy is not a suitable treatment for multiple myeloma, and that chemotherapy is a more effective option.
