Overview

Obesity is a major health problem worldwide and while not generally life-threatening, it can be controlled by drugs. However, several drugs for obesity treatment have been withdrawn due to serious side effects. Fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were withdrawn due to heart valve damage, sibutramine due to cardiovascular risks, and rimonabant due to psychiatric side effects. Orlistat is still approved but its use is limited by gastrointestinal side effects. Effective and safe long-term drugs are needed to combat obesity.
