Overview

Obesity is a major health problem associated with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. While diet and exercise are essential, pharmacological therapy may be added for obese patients or overweight patients with cardiovascular risk factors. Sibutramine, a serotonergic and adrenergic drug, was withdrawn from the market due to an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events. There is a need for effective and safe long-term anti-obesity drugs.
